Schishandra is a tall shrub that grows from 5 to 10 meters high. It originates from northern China, where it is called Wu Wei Zi, which means fruit of five tastes. After eating, sweet, sour, salty, bitter and spicy tastes mix in our mouths. It has been part of traditional folk usage in China for thousands of years. The fruits ripen in late summer, grow in bunches, are red in color and about the size of a currant. The main active ingredient is the tannin schishandrin. Chinese sisandra is considered to be an adaptogen, which means that it can increase a person’s ability to adapt to stress.
